The Bad Carrot

by: Pants

Hops-A-Lot and Mr. Bug saw the Bad Carrot. Hops-A-Lot wanted to eat the Bad Carrot and Mr. Bug said, "No, Hops-A-Lot, don't eat the Bad Carrot!". But Mr. Bug was too late. Hops-A-Lot ate the Bad Carrot and when he ate the Bad Carrot something happened. It made him spit out carrots! Everybody liked him because they weren't bad like the Bad Carrot. Everybody cheered for Hops-A-Lot. Hops-A-Lot got first place in the spitting carrots contest and everybody liked his trophy. He put the trophy in his room.

The Tiger

By: Pie Pie Edgar

Tiny tummies grumble.
Mommy hears them.
It's time to hunt.
She smells gazelle.
She is silent.
Then a powerful pounce.
She drags it to the babies.
Munch, crunch lunch!

The Carrot Cake

by Pie Pie Edgar

Fluffy the rabbit finds out her friend Kacy is moving. Fluffy plans a going away party at her house. Fluffy gets ready right away. She puts up the streamers and goes out to get the carrot cake she ordered.
When she got home she called her friend Tomatoes.
"Hey, I am planning a party for Kacy and I need you to get the balloons," asked Fluffy.
"Sure, I will be right over," he said.
"Ok. Bye," said Fluffy.
Fluffy went to the fridge while holding the cake. Then she put the cake on top of the fridge so she could get the Kool-Aid. Next Tomatoes came with the balloons.
"Where is the cake?" asked Tomatoes.
"On the table," said Fluffy.
Tomatoes looked. "Where?" he asked.
"It was there," she said.
"Well it is not," he said.
Fluffy looked. "Oh no! It's gone!" she said.
"Told you," he said.
"We must find it!" Fluffy said.
They looked and looked. Finally Tomatoes found it.
"Yay!" they shouted.
Then Kacy comes.
"Surprise!" Fluffy and Tomatoes yell.
Then they ate the yummy cake.

I Designed a Roller Coaster

by: Pie Pie
This was an extra fun creative writing we did for our Science Fair. Pie Pie designed her own Roller Coaster! I wanted to share it on our blog.

My Roller Coaster will be for girls. It will be made of steel and will be a suspended type of Coaster. It will have a big first hill. It will have ten loops, two barrel rolls and three corkscrews. You must be as tall as me to ride. There will be three cars to hold people the Fluffy, the Sweetie and the Pinkie. The ride will be twenty minutes long. When you are done you get a Zhu Zhu Pet, Webkin and you may pet a guinea pig.
The End

P.S. For any boys who might be reading this Pie Pie recently realized that her Daddy, Grumpy and Pop Pop couldn't ride her Coaster. So she decided that boys would be allowed to ride! You will not miss out on the fun!

Weird Science Fair

We had the opportunity to participate in Lighthouse Learning Christian Homeschool Co-op's Science Fair. (This is a Co-op we joined about two years ago. We always have fun with these homeschool friends!)
First we had to pick a scientist. Pie Pie picked a Roller Coaster Designer. (I whispered it in her ear first!) She loves Roller Coasters so I thought this would be a great topic to learn about. She agreed with me so the next time we went to the library I ordered lots of books and movies. Then we went to the craft store to get a Roller Coaster model. We were on our way!
I already showed a picture in this post of the progress Pie Pie was making on her model so here is a finished picture!

It was very interesting learning all about Roller Coasters. Here are some of the questions we answered while we were learning.

Where did Roller Coasters start?
In Russia in the 1400's or 1500's as ice sledding. They would sled down 70-foot hills that were very steep and covered with ice.
When did the first wheeled Roller Coaster open?
In Paris in 1804. It was named the Russian Mountains after the country where the sport had originated.
When did Roller Coasters come to North America?
In the 1870's on paper in the form of blueprints. The first one built was the Gravity Pleasure Switchback Railway at Coney Island in 1884.

When did Roller Coasters really get popular in North America?
In the 1920's about 1,500 coasters were built.
When and why did their popularity decline for awhile?
In the 1930's and 1940's due to the Great Depression and World War II. They needed the supplies for the war and people did not have money for fun rides. Over 1,000 coasters were torn down in this time period.
When did they gain popularity again?
Walt Disney opened up the first steel coaster in 1955. It was called the Matterhorn Bobsleds.
How many types of wheels does a modern coaster have?
They have 3 wheels. The road wheel, upstop wheel, and guide wheel. They are all important for safety to keep the car on the track.
Why does the first hill have to be the highest?
So the coaster will have enough energy to make it through the whole ride.
What do designers think about when designing a coaster?
They think about engineering, physics, safety and creating an unforgettable experience.
How many types of coasters are there?
The classic, racer, figure 8, inverted, out and back, suspended, shuttle loop, stand-up, trackless, enclosed, twister and launch.

Some of the resources we used were:
the Internet
Roller Coasters by A.R. Schaefer
Roller Coasters or I Had So Much Fun, I almost Puked by Nick Cook
Popular Mechanics for Kids Rip-Roaring Roller Coasters and All Access to Fun DVD
The Science of Disney Imagineering:Gravity DVD

The night of the Science Fair we had a lot of fun sharing with our friends what we had learned. We also enjoyed learning from the other projects!
I'm looking forward to our next Family Night! Get out your measuring spoons, mixers, and don't forget the chocolate! We're going to be baking up a storm for Top Chef! You will not want to miss that!

Soda Pop, Soda Pop!!

Guest Blogger
Pie Pie

Our family has nine Webkinz. They are cool because you get to play with them on the computer on the Webkinz Wesite and you get to snuggle with them. The bad thing is they die on the computer. It is fun adopting them because you get to name them and pick if it is a boy or a girl. You can also adopt 'Mazing Hamsters from Miss Birdie. Miss Birdie helps you adopt your pet on the website. When you adopt your pet you get a big welcome balloon.

When you are playing on the Webkinz Website you can open places like the Kinzville Academy, the Employment Office, the Curio Shop, and/or the Wish Factory. Kinzville Academy is a school for pets. You get to style a hippo named Plumpy's hair. You can cook pancakes. You can even give your Webkin a check-up from Dr. Quack. Dr. Quack is married to Miss Birdie.

This is Chip. He is a Raccoon.

This is Ginger. She is a Strawberry Cloud Leopard.
This is Ozzy. He is an Oppossum.
This is Blackie. She is a Black Poodle.

Sometimes your pet will get a fever. If that happens you will have to feed it more food. These foods might help your pets keep healthy: carrot cake, chocolate cake, blueberry pie, and hamburgers. My monkey Bananas loves bananas!

These are the twin Cheeky Monkeys- APom and Bananas.

This is Soda Pop. Soda Pop is a Cherry Soda Pup.

This is J.P. He is a Jelly Bean Puppy.
This is Bamboo. She is a Pretty Panda.

My favorite song at Webkinz of the Year Outlet is Tiger, Tiger. It is a really good song!
Soda Pop is my favorite Webkin. She has cherries on her ears.
Soda Pop says, "Hi!". So does the rest of the gang!

The Writing Process Pie Pie Style

The second chapter in our Language Arts book is learning the steps of writing a story. Writing happens to be Pie Pie's least favorite subject. I told her at least she gets to pick what she writes about for this project. Later in life you will have to write about the topic that you are assigned.
Our first step was to figure out the topic. Pie Pie picked Pet Pet Park.
Then we filled in a word web about her topic. They had different questions to help give her ideas for her story. We numbered our ideas so we could put them in the right order.

Then we wrote out our story in number order.

Our next step was to write out a rough copy.

Then we made some revisions for our final copy.

It was rough, but we got the job done! Just in case you can't read the final copy I'll type it out for you on here.

 Pet Pet Park
Pet Pet Park is an online game. I saw it on a commercial and wanted to try it out. I played at Grammy's house on a computer. Jonah and Lissa were with me. My Pet Pet's name is Rocky. I like this game because I see other Pet Pets, I get to help other Pet Pets, and I win prizes.
The End

Not bad for a week's work. Chapter two is done!

Mars was taking a walk as usual. Then something unusual happened. A wizard granted him 3 wishes. His first wish was to get an ice cream bar from Nanny. His second wish was a lot of sticks for his nest. His third wish was to have a Baby Zhu-Zhu Pet. The end.

As soon as Pie Pie was done writing this she said I had to post it on our blog for Nanny to see!  This post is definitely dedicated to you! We love you Nanny!
